How would one volunteer?
Many community websites use members that volunteer.
There are many online communities and groups who utilize volunteer workers. Sites that feature online forums and chats often have moderators and operators who are volunteers. Many directories are seeking volunteer editors. Most ezines and newsletters accept articles on a volunteer basis. There are a lot of email forums where the members volunteer to help each other out by sharing information, resources and advice.

For the same reason people volunteer in real life. Volunteering helps build a sense of community, helps those that need help, and it makes one feel good to give something back to the community as a whole, when they can. Volunteering can help you learn more about the community and it gives you a chance to meet new people and make new friends.
Business owners volunteer and donate to foster a sense of trust in their communities and as a way to make a public relations statement.
